The Petty Quote of the Day

“If Ayelet Shaked is elected to the committee for the appointment of judges, we are going to a new election.”

Miki Zohar, Coalition Chairman and Likud Party stalwart

Zohar made the statement after learning that Kahol Lavan members of the Coalition intended to vote for Shaked instead of the handpicked Netanyahu candidate Osnat Mark.

The unbridled animus that Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu hold for Ayelet Shaked has never been understandable. There has never been a better Justice Minister than Ayelet Shaked, and no one is better suited to be on the Judicial Appointments Committee than she.

The same animus is directed toward Shaked’s partner in Yamina, Naftali Bennett. In just three months as Defense Minister, Bennett exhibited extraordinary organizational skills and prescience when it came to fighting Corona. No one is better able to run the Corona Task Force than Bennett.

Yet Shaked and Bennett have been blacklisted by the Netanyahus from holding any posts because of the rank pettiness of the Netanyahus.

The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

As of 8 am this morning (Wednesday):

There are 42,360 confirmed casesan increase of 2,489 since this time yesterday

19,665 of these have recoveredan increase of 270

183 are in serious condition—no change since yesterday

56 are on ventilators—an increase of 2

371 have died–an increase of 7

There are 22,695 active cases, 529 of which are hospitalized.

The number of newly confirmed cases (2,489) far exceeds the Health Ministry’s “2000 new confirmed cases red line” for closing down the country–and that is what all the talk is about now.

According to the Health Ministry, a decision will be made in two days as to whether to go back to a total lockdown of Israel.

In a follow up to a blog a few days ago in which I wrote about the problems that our daughter has had getting a test, she is feeling much better. Thank you to all who have written expressing concern. By the way, she still has not been able to get a test.

On a related matter, the Health Ministry now estimates that it takes 60 hours from the time a person receives a referral to take a test from his or her doctor until the test is taken and results are received. Of course, this is just nonsense as the case of our daughter abundantly shows.

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

As usual, there were numerous “rock” and Molotov attacks throughout Judea and Samaria; however, the worst attack occurred between Itamar and Elon Moreh where terrorists opened fire on a passing Israeli car. Fortunately, no one was physically wounded, but the terrorists escaped.

Another plea bargain with a terrorist: a military court agreed to a plea deal yesterday for one of the terrorists who helped plan the bomb that blew apart Rina Shnerb last year.

A beautiful smile.

A wonderful person lost forever: Rina Shnerb..

According to the terms of the deal, the terrorist will be sentenced to 16 months in prison and fined 6000 shekels.

Can you believe this?

A little over a year for helping plan Rina’s murder.

And, to top it off, he will make 5 times the amount of the fine in salary from the PLO as he sits in prison.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Big News Or Not In The Fight Against Corona?

With 23 corona vaccine projects underway throughout the world and news about Corona antibody and treatment possibilities permeating the news, one must be wary about reporting anything positive about tackling Corona.

For example, what happened to the supposed breakthrough announced in May that Israeli scientists at the Biological Institute in Nes Ziona had developed an antibody that neutralized Corona in a patient’s body? After a flurry of excitement, there has been no more word about what is going on.

So please take the following with a grain of salt.

In another flurry of excitement two days ago, researchers at Hebrew University announced that they have discovered how the Corona virus operates and can paralyze it in fewer than five days of treatment.

Well, not exactly paralyze it, but transform it into a common cold.

According to Prof. Yaakov Nachmias, the virus produces a huge accumulation of fat in the lung cells through which it then uses to replicate itself. Anyone who has excess lipids (read “cholesterol”) or sugar (read “diabetes”) in the blood is prone to disastrous consequences.

So what can be done?

In Nachmias’ lab in conjunction with a lab in New York at Mt. Sinai Hospital, they have been testing the old anti-cholesterol (pre-statin) drug Ticor (fenofibrate). According to Nachmias: “The drug actually not only stopped the accumulation of healthy fats, but also interfered with cells forming new viruses, almost completely paralyzing the production of the virus in less than five days.”

Sounds great, right?

Before you get too excited about this, consider the kicker that came with the announcement: “If our results are confirmed in a clinical trial, drug treatment can turn this disease into a common cold.”

If our results are confirmed in a clinical trial???

Don’t hold your breath.
