The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona (Covid 19) update. . .

As of 8 am this morning (Thursday):

There are 77,919 confirmed casesan increase of 1,721 since this time yesterday

51,395 of these confirmed cases have recoveredan increase of 1,561

345 are in critical condition–a decrease of 10

106 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—an increase of 2

565 have diedan increase of 1

There are 26,524 active cases.

The best number out of the above statistics is that only 1 person apparently died over the last 24 hours of Corona. However, your humble servant suspects that is yet another glitch in Health Ministry reportage.

In the face of what has been a veritable explosion of Corona in the last three weeks, the idiotic Coronavirus Cabinet decided yesterday to:

*remove restrictions on street shops this coming weekend

*remove restrictions on shopping malls this coming weekend

*remove restrictions on amusement facilities this coming weekend

*remove restrictions on children’s playgrounds this coming weekend

*remove restrictions on public parks this coming weekend

*allow some flights into and out of Israel to resume of August 16

Yes, you read all of that correctly. Insanity reigns supreme in the Coronavirus cabinet.

An insanity that is recognized by the general public: in a survey completed yesterday by the Homefront Command:

*83% of those surveyed do not understand the government’s Corona guidelines and restrictions

*81% of those surveyed have no confidence in the government’s handling of Corona

OneIsrael agrees with the public on both questions.

The city of Tel Aviv and its display of solidarity . . .

Mayor Ron Huldai ordered Tel Aviv City Hall to be lit up with a Lebanese flag last night in solidarity with the country after the explosion at the port of Beirut:

Look closely; you can just make out the green tree in the middle.

While some applauded this display of solidarity, many did not. These were some of the responses in social media:

They burn the Israeli flag in the streets of Lebanon and we honor theirs here.

Huldai would have probably put up a Nazi flag after the attack on Dresden.

In case everyone forgot, Lebanon is an enemy state.

The day will come when missiles fired from Lebanon will illuminate the skies over Tel Aviv and destroy the Tel Aviv City Hall.

Ironically and perversely, guess what message was sent from Lebanon to Israel this morning regarding the lighting of City Hall last night?

“We will destroy Tel Aviv with missiles.”

Living In The Era Of A Subservient Israel

“For me, the application of sovereignty has not been dropped from the agenda – it depends on the White House.”

PM Netanyahu, speaking two nights ago at a meeting of Likud Party officials

It depends on the White House?

How did we ever reach the point in this country where every action we take must be first cleared by Washington? How did we ever become so subservient?

When we regained the Golan, eastern Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria in 1967, did we ask for anyone’s permission to do so?

When Levi Eshkol expanded the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem in the early 1970’s, did we ask for anyone’s permission to do so?

When Menachem Begin extended Israeli law over the Golan Heights in the early 1980s, did we ask for anyone’s permission to do so?

No to all three questions because there was a time when Israel was strong and decisive. There was a time when Israel bravely did what was right. There was a time when Israel was unafraid to go it alone.

Those days are obviously long past.

How many times have we heard PM Netanyahu talk about how Judea and Samaria are the ancestral home of the Jews and Israel, and no one can tell us otherwise?

Dozens of times. But now we know that this was just more of Netanyahu electioneering to the Israeli “right”–especially to the Jewish community Yesha Council that oversees Area C. In this regard, Yesha Council Chairman David Elhayani harshly criticized Netanyahu yesterday, remarking: “Mr. Prime Minister, the one who repeatedly promised to apply Israeli sovereignty over Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley, this decision will not be made Washington, but in Jerusalem.”

Unfortunately, Elhayani is absolutely wrong. In the era of a subservient Israel, the decision–if it is made at all–will be made in Washington, not Jerusalem.
