The Quotation of the Day

“We will raise the cry of every citizen in the State of Israel in face of the wave of price increases in the areas of food, electricity, and fuel . . . Yesterday, Finance Minister Lieberman showed that he is disconnected from reality when he said that Israel has the most moderate price increases in the world. How does a couple start the month already in red despite earning two salaries? The situation is a catastrophe, and to top it off taxes are going up too. We are going to paralyze the entire country with demonstrations.”

Yoni Yahav, one of the organizers of the protests against price increases in Israel.

The News on the Israeli Street

The daily Corona update . . .

It has been a disastrous month+ of Corona in Israel.

Since the beginning of January, 1,708,523 Israelis have tested positive for Corona, and 853 have died. 94% of the deaths are of people 60 years of age or older.

These numbers are simply staggering as is the fact that 3,111,307 Israelis have now had Corona.

The numbers yesterday:

46,429 new cases of Corona were diagnosed yesterday bringing to 378,094 the number of active cases in the country.

The positive test rate was 24.94%.

1,130 are in serious condition; 355 in critical.

9,111 Israelis have died according to the Health Ministry database—an increase of 98 since yesterday.

What is the governmental reaction to all of this?

As we have previously written, the government has decided to throw in the towel and will reduce Corona restrictions in public venues beginning on Sunday.

An unusual protest in Gaza yesterday . . .

A protest in Gaza condemning Iranian and Iranian proxy Hezbollah's involvement in Lebanon.

A protest in Gaza condemning Iranian and Iranian proxy Hezbollah’s involvement in Lebanon.

A relatively small but embarrassing-to-Hamas protest in Gaza yesterday featured protesters burning pictures of Hezbollah head Hassan Nasrallah and even former Quds Force Commander Qassem Suleimani. The protest was in support of Syrian refugees.

Afterwards, Hamas issued a statement saying that people who support and supported “the Palestinian cause” such as Nasrallah and Suleimani should not be demeaned.

TODAY’S BLOG

The U.S. Calls Israel On The Carpet Again

It has quickly become an old story as every official of the Biden Administration uses every meeting with Israeli officials to focus on criticism of Israel.

Yesterday it was U.S. Ambassador To Israel Tom Nides’ turn as he met with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi. Just the fact that Nides was meeting with Kochavi was odd in itself given the fact that ambassadors to a country rarely meet with military chiefs of staff of that country.

The meeting had Kochavi telling Nides about security challenges facing the IDF and the two talking about the Iranian threat and possibilities for security cooperation in the Middle East and Persian Gulf.

However, it then quickly turned into Kochavi obsequiously flattering Nides with appreciation for America’s commitment to Israel’s security (apparently there was no mention of the Iranian nuclear appeasement talks in Vienna).

Before it focused on the main reason for the meeting: the U.S. condemning Israel for the death of Amar Abd al-Majd Assad (see our previous blog about this).

And ended with Kochavi on his knees promising to Nides that an in-depth military investigation is taking place, and that a police investigation is  ongoing. Kochavi stressed to Nides that Israel views the incident as an extremely serious “value event” (meaning that the soldiers did not conform to the values of the IDF).

What was not reported is that Kochavi undoubtedly told Nides that the soldiers involved would be found guilty and chucked into a military prison.

And so it goes in Israel today. We wish you:

Shabbat Shalom!
