. . . BREAKING NEWS . . .

*Within the last two hours, there have been stabbings at a mall in Beersheva and on a street in Netanya. In both cases, police have yet to say whether the attacks were criminal or “nationalistic” in motivation.

*Along with the rest of the world, we have been watching events unfolding in Belgium today. As of this hour (4 pm), 34 people have reportedly been killed and more than 200 wounded (many critically).

Inasmuch as the terrorists almost certainly came from the Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels and one of the targets was the Molenbeek metro station, you may gain some perspective on this terrorist event by reading a previous israelstreet blog “From Molenbeek to the European Union” (click here).

UPDATES 7 am Israel time:

–>An unusual day yesterday on the Palestinian terror front . . .

It was indeed a rare day yesterday in that we had no Palestinian stabbing attacks. However, days like that are often followed by spikes in violence, so we’ll wait and see what today brings.

Which is not to say that yesterday wasn’t violent. There were Palestinian riots at Salfit in Samaria, at Rachel’s Tomb near Bethlehem, in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Shuafat and Issawiya, in Beit Awa beside Hebron, and in Zeita.

“Rocks” and Molotovs were hurled at Israeli motorists near Azzun, on the Husan bypass road, near Karni Shomron, at Abu Dis, and beside Hizma to name a few places.

–>You will recall, dear reader, that a Palestinian terrorist armed with a rifle and a knife attempted to infiltrate the Jewish community of Elon Moreh Sunday night.

Fortunately, that terrorist was captured. But you will not believe what happened in the aftermath of that attempted attack.

The Harel home on Givat 771 being destroyed by two bulldozers. Look closely: you can see Shechem (Nablus) on the opposite hill.

The Harel home on Givat 771 being destroyed by two bulldozers. Look closely: you can see Shechem (Nablus) on the opposite hill.

Yesterday morning, a contingent of Israeli police and officers from the Civil Administration showed up on Givat (Hill) 771 beside Elon Moreh and destroyed a Jewish community home belonging to the Harel family. As the couple’s 4 children watched, demolition equipment reduced the home to rubble.

Why you may ask? According to our so-called “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon, the home was built on state land without a proper permit. However, the head of the Shomron Regional Council, Yossi Dagan, spoke for many of us when he declared:

“This is absurd. Precisely at this hour, in which the citizens of Israel in general and Samaria in particular, deal with terrorism, we find the Minister of Defense and the Civil Administration destroying homes that sit on state land and bother no one. I call on the government come to its senses. stop this outrage, and focus on restoring security and a sense of security to residents of Samaria and the State of Israel. “

Truth if ever spoken. Doesn’t the “Defense” Minister have more important things to be doing than sending forces out into Samaria to destroy Jewish community homes?

–>Speaking of Samaria and lack of security for its residents, there was a large demonstration yesterday.

A small part of the estimated 300 demonstrators yesterday.

A small part of the estimated 300 demonstrators yesterday.

The demonstrators were protesting the way that political correctness has placed Israelis in danger–in this case by allowing Palestinians to ride on Israeli public transport in Samaria. Not only are Israelis on buses placed in danger, but also Israelis standing at bus stops are sitting ducks for would-be terrorists standing at the same bus stops.

About 300 Jewish community members marched from the Ariel Junction where the IDF soldier was stabbed last week to the Gittit Avishar Junction at the end of Highway 5 east of Barkan.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Another day at the AIPAC annual convention in Washington, another disingenuous speaker.

This time it was the utterly repulsive Hillary Clinton who gave a speech that roughly followed the same template as the one given the day before by American Vice-President Joe Biden.

Before your humble servant gets to that speech, allow him to explain why Clinton is so reviled here in Israel (so much so that Bernie Sanders won yesterday’s Democrats Abroad primary in Israel 60.8% to Clinton’s 39.1%).

That animus probably dates back to May of 1998 when Clinton, as First Lady, became the first person ever associated with a presidential administration to call for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Of course, that call did not surprise many people here because we had long known of her embrace of Yasser Arafat as “a freedom fighter” and description of Israelis as “oppressors.”

But let’s fast forward to January of 2009 when Obama’s first term as President began and along with it Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State.

From the outset, Israelis saw Clinton aggressively supporting Obama’s policy of distancing– “creating daylight between”– the U.S. and Israel. And not only supporting, but actually helping formulate that policy.

The cornerstone of that policy was, and is, an obsession with the Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, and an obsession with Jews living in eastern Jerusalem. It is a cornerstone that many believe was the brainchild of Clinton herself. Beginning in 2009, hardly a single Clinton press conference or public speaking event which focused on the “Middle East peace process” did not include harsh criticism of Israel.

By all accounts, that harsh criticism was over the top. As a New York Times article put it:

“Mrs. Clinton’s marching orders from the White House were to demand that Israel cease the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank as a way to lure the Palestinians into talks, and she did so with a fervor that surprised Mr. Obama’s advisers.”

Of course, the settlement freeze that Clinton ultimately wrung out of PM Netanyahu had absolutely the opposite results. The Palestinians refused to return to the so-called “negotiating” table, and violence against Israelis increased.

We could go on and on, but let’s return to the speech yesterday.

Just as Biden’s the day before, Clinton’s speech at AIPAC began with almost exactly the same meaningless cliches, but with a twist:

“Now, we may not have always agreed on every detail, but we’ve always shared an unwavering, unshakable commitment to our alliance and to Israel’s future as a secure and democratic homeland for the Jewish people.”

Not agreed on every “detail” is a gross understatement: what about the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, an undivided Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital, and the Democratic Party Iranian Nuclear Weapons Appeasement Agreement?

“The United States and Israel must be closer than ever, stronger than ever and more determined than ever to prevail against our common adversaries and to advance our shared values.”

Yes, the U.S. and Israel must be closer than ever, but however close we are now is no thanks to former Secretary of State Clinton who did nothing during her term in office to further that goal.

“And if I’m fortunate enough to be elected president, the United States will reaffirm we have a strong and enduring national interest in Israel’s security. And we will never allow Israel’s adversaries to think a wedge can be driven between us.”

Clinton has spent a career doing little except generate fodder for creating a wedge between Israel and the U.S.

Much of Clinton’s speech that followed focused on Iran–and how it is still such a dangerous power (one has to shake one’s head at how Clinton, Obama, and Biden are able to rationalize the Agreement made with Iran).

But finally, as always, the speech template was followed, and we got a glimpse of what will happen if and when Clinton becomes president:

“As we have differences, as any friends do, we will work to resolve them quickly and respectfully. We will also be clear that the United States has an enduring interest in and commitment to a more peaceful, more stable, more secure Middle East. And we will step up our efforts to achieve that outcome.”

. . . America needs an Israel strong enough to deter and defend against its enemies, strong enough to work with us to tackle shared challenges and strong enough to take bold steps in the pursuit of peace.”

“Israelis deserve a secure homeland for the Jewish people. Palestinians should be able to govern themselves in their own state, in peace and dignity. And only a negotiated two-state agreement can survive those outcomes . . . Everyone has to do their part by avoiding damaging actions, including with respect to settlements . . . All of us need to look for opportunities to create the conditions for progress, including by taking positive actions that can rebuild trust.”

In sum, what would Israelis have to look forward to with Clinton in the White House? Obama on steroids. Clinton will ramp up the “peace process”, excoriating Israel every step of the way concerning “settlements” and demanding ever greater concessions from Israel.

It is a decidedly unpleasant and nauseating prospect.
